The Operator
Winter 2021. I had just come home. Set down my bag. Seven years at Spire, and in that moment I knew — clearly, quietly, without drama — that season was done.
I sat down at my desk. Something in me said go watch the podcast you did with Michael Preece.
Before my finger hit play, my phone buzzed.
Michael Preece.
I picked up laughing. Said — Michael, I was literally just about to watch you. What's going on?
We caught up. And then he said: "I really miss being on set. I'd like to make one more thing before I leave the planet."
"Before I leave the planet."
Everything in me went to making that happen.
Michael Preece. The director who gave me my first take, my first "action," my first shot on television — Walker, Texas Ranger, 1994. A man who had spent a lifetime behind the camera — True Grit, Walker Texas Ranger, decades of American television — telling me quietly that he wasn't done yet.
I couldn't say no to that. I didn't want to.
So I started MollyLlama Studios. Because some things don't fit inside a job description. Some things are just a call you answer.
For four years I stewarded his story. Produced the film. Sat across from him in that chair and watched him remember who he was.
Halfway through the shoot, Michael handed me a piece of paper. A fully executed agreement assigning me his life rights to produce his story. No ask. No negotiation. He just handed it to me.
Michael Preece passed in February 2025.
The film is still being finished. The format is still being decided. None of that mattered on the day he passed.
His family called me.
They had watched this trailer together at his celebration of life. Every one of them. And what they described — the joy, the tears, the recognition of seeing someone they loved honored the way he deserved to be honored — I wasn't prepared for that. You can't prepare for that.
They told me it had become a family heirloom.
I've worked on a lot of things in my life. I've built programs, managed portfolios, closed deals. I know what a return looks like.
That phone call was the return. That was the whole return. Nothing before or since has felt like that.
That's MollyLlama Studios. Not a production company that chases projects. A steward that gets chosen.
Serving. Stewardship. Story.
